Ways in Building a Greenhouse

It is important to provide a right place for growing plants. So it is proper to plan carefully before you start building a greenhouse. A greenhouse or also called a sunroom is a building usually with glass walls and roof for the exhibition and cultivation of plants under controlled conditions. It is just easy, not time-consuming or need not be expensive to build a sunroom. There are lot of things to be considered if you want to learn how to make a greenhouse, like the growing space desired, available sites, home architecture and costs.

Here’s a simple guide on how to make a sun room.

Sun is important to plants because it is vital in the process of making their food. So it is likely to have the greenhouse where there is a maximum sunlight. The best choice is to build it in the south or southeast side of a building. Deciduous trees are effective in shading the greenhouse from acute late afternoon sunlight however they should not shade the sunroom in the morning. It is required to maximize winter sun exposure especially if you will use the greenhouse whole year round. Remember that during winter the sun is low in the southern sky causing long shadows to be cast by trees and buildings.

Another requirement for the site to be used in building a greenhouse is having a good drainage. Build greenhouse in above surrounding ground so irrigation and rainwater will flow gradually. Other things to be considered includes light requirements where plants are growing, sources of electricity, heat and water, shelter from winter wind. Greenhouse should be convenient to both utilities and people. A storage area and a workplace for potting plants should be nearby.

There are several types of greenhouse. There is one where you can easily attached to a house garage or it can be an own standing structure. Site and preference prescribed what green house to build.

Lean-to
A lean-to is half a greenhouse break along the peak of the roof. This is useful when space is limited and this is a least expensive structure compared to an ordinary greenhouse building. The disadvantages of this kind of sunroom include a limit of space, ventilation, sunlight and control of temperature and the supporting wall limits.

Even-span
An even-span is a full size structure attached to another building. This is usually the most costly and the largest option of greenhouse but it caters a more usable space and can be lengthen to a desired size. This has a better shape than a lean-to in terms of air circulation. This can accommodate two-three benches of growing crops.

Window-mounted
This can be attached to either south or east part of the house. This offers a low cost and can grow only few plants.

Freestanding Structures
This is a separate structure that can be sat apart from the house or other building. 17 to 18 feet wide is the size of the lowest cost space available for a freestanding greenhouse.

Always remember that in deciding a type of greenhouse, be sure to plan it adequately.
