How To Build Cabinets: A Step By Step Guide

Regardless of what type of cabinets you are trying to build, whether a kitchen cabinet, a dresser, a medicine cabinet, a cabinet for your stereo or a bathroom cabinet, constructing cabinets is basically the same. This box-shape type of furniture can either be built standing alone or sometimes attached to a wall and is basically made of wood used for storage and organizers.

With the prices of quality furniture cabinets increasing, custom made cabinets are now being completed by homeowners themselves. Trying to cut expenses into half and building your own cabinets is the way to go. Remember careful planning is necessary in building cabinets. Go thoroughly and review the materials before proceeding in this project. First in mind is to know your basic cabinet components: the kick plate, carcass, and strong back, face frame, doors, drawers (which can be optional) and lastly, the forefront. Here is a step by step guide on how to build cabinets:

1. Determine the size you would want your cabinet to be and for what purpose. The standard size for a cabinet is 34.5 inches in height and 24 inches in depth. You can choose either softwood or hardwood plywood as your case for the construction. After getting the exact measurements, sketch it in a piece of paper.

2. Decide how many doors and compartments you need. Indicate the measurement of each part of the cabinet in your sketch.

3. Now, prepare the materials for your cabinet. Go to your nearest lumber shop and purchase the specific materials depending on the structure of your cabinet. Fused melamine is suggested because it usually lasts longer and does not rust. Buy wood, nails, joints and other link tools. Remember to get high quality lumber.

4. Use the 48″ x 96” piece of wood for every sheet you are constructing.

5. Purchase a dado, wall saw, table saw and chop saw and saw down the pieces into the desired size and measurement in your plan marking each piece of lumber according to their use.

6. Begin constructing the foundation and the back part of the cabinet. Secure both of the parts with nail and hinges. Use safety goggles when cutting or sawing wood. Place the fused melamine sheet unto the wall saw carefully.

7. Set the saw blade to cut on the desired length of your cabinet. Set it in 24 inches and turn it on.

8. Cut the top and bottom part of the wood in 24 inches for the depth and width of your choice.

9. Band the side with the chosen length.

10. Secure tightly the top, bottom and sides of your cabinets with 1 ½ inches of staples. Attach hinges and latches

11. Finishing products, paint and varnish can be applied to the cabinet to get that more finished appearance.

You must know how to build cabinets in no time so that you will save lots of money. No need to hire a professional or carpenter.
