Getting Ahead On How To Build A Loft Bed

When you have a rather small dorm room or apartment and you need to create additional space for more furnitures or create an area for study, a practical loft bed is the best solution. Having a loft bed comes really handy especially when parents also want something new for their kid’s bedroom than a conventional double-bunk bed, or if the kid’s room is rather tiny and you need more space for him to enjoy his room. There are a lot of guides on how to build a loft bed but there never seems anything that sounded so easy to understand. Believe me, loft beds are quite easy to make if you only have the right materials and handtools for the construction.

Having a project such as how to make a loft bed will surely be a fun thing to do with your partner. You will be able to create designs and pour in all your creative juices to make the most of your bedroom. Making loft beds aren’t just for experts, it can also be for someone relatively new to building and carpentry but has the passion and dedication to create some new and durable for the home. Remember though that when you know how to build a loft bed, you have to make the necessary preparations like identifying the size of the bed, making some necessary measurements and knowing what the design the bed should be like once it’s done.

To know how to build a loft bed, I’ve surfed the internet myself to find a guide that is very simple. And here is something that I have found:

MATERIALS:
• Plywood – 4 ftx8ft, ¾ inches thick
• 4×4 lumber, 4 pieces, 8” long
• 2×6x8 lumber, 3 pieces. Cut 2 pieces of this into 78 inches long and the other piece is to be divided into 2 pieces with 37inches in length.
• Lumber boards, 3 pieces, 1 inch thick, 3.5 inches wide and 8 feet long.
• Screws and lag bolts

PROCEDURE:
Create a box that would fit the mattress, leaving some room, about an extra inch around the edges for easy linen change. Build the box with the dimensions of 40”x78” and about 5.5” tall. Place your twin mattress on the floor as your guide and build the box over the mattress with the 2×6 lumber pieces are your sides and the plywood as the base of the box. Use 3” long drywall screws to connect the 2×6 pieces together at the corners and another 1 5/8 long drywall screw at about 2 ft spacing in between to connect the box and the plywood.

Determine how tall your loft bed should be so as not to bump your head on the ceiling when you climb up to your bed. Also, determine the space underneath if you need it to be wide enough for you to put a desk or it should be just for hanging your clothes. Use the 4×4 lumber for that, cutting it to your desired length. Posts with 8 inches long will give good height underneath the bed giving it more space for your desk, or other type of furniture that you would want to put in there. Finally, attach the posts to the box with lag bolts. Lastly, you create the ladder using 1” thick wood slats by placing each at about 10” to 1 foot apart. Keep the slope at about 60 degrees and attach the finished ladder to the loft bed with screws.
